The Life of Gracie

The Life of Gracie

I asked Momma Two-Legs if she would write how Gracie joined the Crew, Below is her story.

I found Gracie at the church that I was attending one night. He was crying outside the door. A friend of mine put the cat in my car at my request. I saw that the cat was in a bad way and decided to take it home with me.
When I got home and I took the cat inside I accessed the situation. Her nose was running and water also came from it’s eyes. ( my son came up with the name “S’not” for the cat. I chose “Grace” for it was God’s grace that I was there that night.)

Anyway, I took two 2 litter soda bottles and filled them with hot water and wrapped them in towels. Then I put them in a box with the cat who quickly laid down between the bottles and went to sleep. I had an old blanket in the box as well to make her very comfy. The reason for the bottles was I could tell after holding the poor cat that she could not maintain body heat. So bad was this animal that there was hardly nothing to it. Very light weight and snow blind and starved nearly to death. I put the box in my bed room so I could listen for her during the night. I kept getting up for three nights (as well as checking on the cat during the day), only to find she had not moved. I needed to check many times to see if he was even breathing.

After the third night the cat started responding to my voice and was able to eat. She had not eaten since the first night. She only slept. I took care of her in my room and after a week I brought her out to briefly meet her house buddies. The encounter was interesting . She did not try to get down and none of the other cats tried to fight her. As I held her they would just sniff the air. I dared not let them touch her for I had not taken her to the vets yet. I was hopeful that they would all get along.

I took her to the vets three days later. He checked her over and agreed that she was indeed snow blind. Her little eyes were also very crossed. He gave her a shot of “something” that I do not recall and told me that if I had not done what I did she would have not lasted another night out in the cold. He also told me she was a Maine Coon Cat thru and thru.
Although she was a full grown cat she weighed a little over 2 pounds. He said she was a girl of about a year old. Surprisingly enough, she had nothing contagious and he told me that I could introduce her to the house hold when ever I felt comfortable that she was rested enough.

Well, the total of two weeks had lapsed and she was out of the box and finding places to lie down in my room. My bed, a corner, a chair…..you get the picture. She had now gotten a healthy appetite and was putting on some weight. She weighed about 4 pounds now. She kept going over to the door and sniffing under it. I think the other cats were doing the same thing.

This was the day! I took her out into the living room. I talked to all the other cats in the most tender voice I could. I talked to Grace and told them all to get along. She was our new baby in the house and I wanted no fighting. You understand I did the talking to comfort me more than them. HeeHee. I put her down and much to my surprise, they all got along right away. I was very pleased.

About one week later I started grooming Grace. Her fur was very matted. She was to frail to undergo such a treatment before. “comb and cut…comb and cut …comb and opps!!!!!! Grace is a BOY !!!!!
Well, I got on the phone and called the vet. It”s a BOY! We both laughed over that one. See, she was so matted it was hard to tell and to look at him, he still looks like a little girl cat. He has such a look about him. I never changed his name. My son laughed and called him “S’not Grace!” Funny huh! So now we all just call him Gracie.

He has been here for 8 years now. He never seemed to be an adult cat. I have often wondered if the terrible shape he was in when he came into my life stunted his maturity growth. He is a little love and I thank God that he is in our lives. He is our little Gracie.
